How Many Days Do You Need on the Gold Coast?

How many days are enough on the Gold Coast: three for the beach, the hinterland and one big activity; five with theme parks; a week with Byron Bay or Moreton Island. Prices checked October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Three full days is enough for a first visit to the Gold Coast: one on the beach, one in the rainforest behind it, and one for the big paid activity, a whale cruise in season or a jet boat out of season. Add a day for each theme park you want, and two more for the day trips to Byron Bay or Moreton Island. Fewer than three days and you will spend most of them in Surfers Paradise.

Three days on the Gold Coast

Day 1: the beach and the view. Start with a surf lesson in the morning, before the afternoon sea breeze. Go Ride A Wave’s two-hour lesson at Surfers Paradise is the most reviewed on the coast: 1,300 reviews at 4.9, from US$66 in current promotion (usually US$70) a person with the board and a rash shirt or wetsuit (checked October 2026). In the afternoon swim between the red and yellow flags, then go up SkyPoint at sunset. On a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, finish at the beachfront markets on the Esplanade, 4 pm to 9 pm.

Day 2: the hinterland. The rainforest is an hour or so inland. Take a coach day to Springbrook’s waterfalls and Natural Bridge, to Tamborine Mountain’s skywalk and wineries, or to the treetop walk in Lamington National Park; each starts from about US$85 with pickup on the coast. If you would rather keep the day for the beach, the evening glow worm walk on Tamborine Mountain fits after dinner instead. The day trips page compares them.

Day 3: one big thing. From June to October, make it a whale cruise. Out of season, a jet boat on the Broadwater, a parasail over it, or a tandem skydive with a beach landing. Then walk the headland at Burleigh Heads in the afternoon and eat in Burleigh.

When to stay longer

Theme parks. Each of the big parks is a full day. Movie World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild and Paradise Country are one group with shared multi-park passes; Dreamworld is separate. Two parks turn a three-day trip into five. The theme park tickets page explains who sells what.

Byron Bay. About 90 km south, across the border in New South Wales, which is an hour ahead of the Gold Coast from October to April. It is a long day trip and a better overnight.

Moreton Island. The snorkel cruise over the Tangalooma Wrecks checks in at Rivergate Marina in Brisbane at 9 am, so from the Gold Coast it is a full, early day. It costs from US$188 (checked October 2026).

Where to base yourself

For a short stay, base in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach: most tour pickups are there, and the light rail connects both to Main Beach, where the boats leave, and to Burleigh Heads. The best area to stay guide compares the neighbourhoods.

Is a week too long?

Not if you want a beach holiday. The coast is a string of beach towns from Main Beach down to Coolangatta, each with its own feel, and the hinterland has a different national park for each day. A week lets you do the day trips without rushing and leaves room for a rainy day or two. For a first visit, though, three days covers the essentials.
