Bring swimwear and a towel; the school supplies the board, the rash shirt or wetsuit, and sunscreen.

  2. Learn on the Beach First

The instructor covers ocean safety, where to lie on the board and how to stand before you go into the water.

  3. Catch White Water

Beginners start in the broken white water close to shore, where the waves are small and you can stand on the bottom.

  4. Keep Going

Go Ride A Wave also sells a three-lesson course of 2 hours each for those who want to keep progressing.

Why take a lesson

The Gold Coast’s surf breaks are some of the best known in Australia, and they are not all beginner waves. A lesson puts you on the right stretch of beach for the day’s conditions, on a soft board that will not hurt you, with an instructor beside you. Surf Life Saving Queensland’s advice for every swimmer applies: rips are the danger, and the flagged area is the patrolled one. Lessons run all year; Currumbin’s surf schools say the water rarely drops below 18 °C.

Go Ride A Wave runs on Surfers Paradise beach itself, in the middle of the coast. Children under 9 must come with a parent who is not taking the lesson but can go into the water to help, and under-8s cannot join.

Australian Surfing Adventures chooses the beach on the morning by the conditions, and its group lesson needs at least four people to run; if it is cancelled for that reason you get a full refund. Its private lesson goes ahead rain or shine unless the surf is unsafe, when you can reschedule or take a refund.

Kirra Point Surf School teaches at Kirra, at the southern end near Coolangatta, in a sheltered bay with gentle waves for beginners. The adult group lesson is for 13 and over; the private lesson takes children from 5.

Get Wet Surf School teaches only children aged 6 to 12 at The Spit, north of Main Beach, with no more than four children per coach. Children must be comfortable in the water, and parents may help hold the board.

Practical: what to bring and when

Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat and water; every school supplies the board, and most the rash shirt and wetsuit. Morning lessons avoid the afternoon storms that come in summer from December to February. After a lesson, the sea from above is the next step: see parasailing or a whale cruise from June to October.

I took 2 classes in the end and starting in a bigger group to get the hang of the basics was fine, but really enjoyed the smaller group in the afternoon to build on what we’d learned in the morning.
