Gold Coast Rainy Day Activities

What to do on the Gold Coast when it rains: glow worms, waterfalls at their fullest, SkyPoint, the theme parks and what to move to another day. Checked October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Rain on the Gold Coast usually comes as a storm in the afternoon, not a grey week, so most rainy days still have a dry morning. The best plan is to swap the beach and the boat for the things rain improves: the rainforest, the waterfalls and the glow worms that live in the wet gullies of the hinterland. SkyPoint and a long lunch fill the gaps, and the water activities move to tomorrow morning.

Springbrook's waterfalls run hardest after rain, which makes a wet day a day for the hinterland.

The short answer

On a wet day, go inland. The hinterland is a rainforest, and it is at its best in the wet: the waterfalls at Springbrook run hardest after rain, and the glow worms of Tamborine Mountain and Natural Bridge shine brightest in the warm, humid months from about December to March. A guided evening glow worm walk costs from US$89 a person with pickup on the coast (checked October 2026), rated 4.7 from 640 reviews. A glow worm walk is made for a damp evening; the operator decides whether a storm makes the track unsafe.

When it rains most

December to February is the wet season, and February is usually the wettest month, with about 184 mm of rain on average. The storms tend to arrive late in the afternoon and early evening, so a summer day often starts sunny. Winter, June to August, is the dry season. If your trip falls in summer, book the boat, the parasail and the jet ski for the morning and keep the afternoon loose.

Surfers Paradise in the rain

The one indoor attraction in Surfers Paradise worth a ticket is SkyPoint, on the 77th level of the Q1 tower. Low cloud can hide the view, which is why the year-long ticket matters: you can go up when the cloud lifts, even on another day. After 8 pm the deck is 18 and over. The beachfront markets on the Esplanade are called off in bad weather. For a rainy evening, the dinner show in Broadbeach and the dinner cruise on the Broadwater are both easy calls.

The theme parks in the rain

The theme parks stay open in rain. Outdoor rides usually pause while lightning is close, and water parks are a poor bet in a storm. A Dreamworld day ticket costs from US$77 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026) and is valid for 12 months, but it cannot be refunded, so it suits a trip with a few spare days. The theme park tickets page explains who sells which park.

What to move to another day

Whale cruises, parasailing, jet skis, the skydive and the balloon flights depend on the weather, and operators cancel or reschedule when it turns. Dates and cancellation terms are on each listing, so if the forecast is poor the evening before, check whether you can move them then. Surf lessons usually go ahead in light rain, since you are wet anyway; the school decides when a storm or the surf makes it unsafe.

A rainy-day plan

Morning: if it is dry, do the water activity you booked. Afternoon: when the storm rolls in, go up SkyPoint, or catch the light rail to Broadbeach for a long lunch. Evening: the glow worm walk, which is at its best on exactly the kind of warm, damp night that ruins a beach day.
