How a Parasail Flight Works

From the waiver to the boat ride back.

  1. Sign the Waiver

Every flyer signs a waiver, and anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs is turned away. Bring photo ID, wear beachwear and bring a change of clothes.

  2. Board the Boat

The boat trip lasts about 1.5 hours with Gold Coast Parasail, with each flyer or group taking a turn in the air.

  3. Fly Solo, as a Pair or a Trio

Tandem and triple flights must stay under a combined weight: 200 kg with Gold Coast Parasail, 180 kg with Surfers Paradise Water Sports, which also asks solo flyers to weigh at least 60 kg.

  4. Expect Weather Changes

Departure times can move for weather or guest numbers. Summer storms tend to come in the late afternoon, so morning flights are the safer pick from December to February.

What a parasail flight is

You sit in a harness under a parachute-like canopy on a line from the back of a speedboat. As the boat runs, the canopy lifts you, and the crew lets the line out until you are about 400 feet, roughly 120 metres, above the water. On the Gold Coast the flights run over the Broadwater, the lagoon behind Surfers Paradise, with views of the skyline and South Stradbroke Island.

Gold Coast Parasail gives the longest time on the water: a 1.5-hour boat trip around the flights. Under-13s must fly with an adult, and the company asks you to bring photo ID and cash.

Surfers Paradise Water Sports includes the photos and sets a minimum weight of 60 kg for solo flyers, so lighter children fly tandem. Under-16s need an adult or guardian with them.

The Odyssey package suits a pair who want both thrills in one booking; the jet ski and the parasail run from different places, and transport between them is not included.

Who should not fly

Both parasail operators exclude pregnant flyers and anyone with back or heart conditions; Surfers Paradise Water Sports also lists high blood pressure and altitude sickness. Neither flies anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs. For the same coast from the water at speed, see jet boat rides or jet ski tours; for a far longer drop, the tandem skydive.

"Awesome experience. Parked 5m next to the entrance, we were ready to go in no time. The crew were all kind, attentive and knowledgeable. All equipment looks A+++ and excellent safety standards/protocols. The parasailing itself was absolutely awesome, and my girls even went up for a second time that same boat ride. Highlight was getting "dipped" into the water on request, skip handled it all like a pro."
