Brisbane or the Gold Coast?
Brisbane or the Gold Coast: the difference, how far apart they are, the train and the drive, and which suits a beach holiday, a city break or a family trip. Checked October 2026.
Brisbane and the Gold Coast are about an hour apart and make very different trips. Brisbane is Queensland’s capital, a city on a river with museums, restaurants and a riverside parkland. The Gold Coast is a strip of beach towns with surf, theme parks and rainforest an hour inland. For a beach holiday, stay on the Gold Coast. For a city break, stay in Brisbane. With time for both, base yourself on the coast and take the train into the city for a day.

The short answer
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| Beaches, surf lessons, theme parks | The Gold Coast |
| Museums, galleries, a river city, food | Brisbane |
| A family holiday with children | The Gold Coast |

| A few days of each | Base on the Gold Coast, day-trip Brisbane |
How far apart they are
Central Brisbane is about 78 km from the Gold Coast, about an hour and ten minutes by car, according to the Queensland tourism board, and longer at peak hour. By train, the Gold Coast line runs from the city to Helensvale in a little over an hour, with Gold Coast stations including Helensvale, Nerang, Robina and Varsity Lakes. From Helensvale the G:link light rail runs down the coast through Southport and Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach and, since August 2026, Burleigh Heads. Check Translink for times and fares.
What the Gold Coast has that Brisbane does not
The surf beaches, first of all: Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Coolangatta and Kirra, all patrolled between the red and yellow flags. Then the theme parks, a whole day each, and the water activities on the Broadwater: jet boats, parasailing, jet skis and the whale cruises from Main Beach. Behind the coast, the rainforest of Springbrook, Tamborine and Lamington is an hour or so away, with waterfalls and glow worms. The Gold Coast activities overview ranks what is worth paying for.
What Brisbane has that the Gold Coast does not
A city. Brisbane is the place for galleries and museums, the riverside parkland at South Bank with its lagoon, ferries on the river, and a restaurant scene that does not depend on the beach. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is in the city’s suburbs. It is also the gateway to Moreton Island and, further north, the Sunshine Coast.
Day trips within two hours
From the Gold Coast, the hinterland national parks are an hour or so inland, Byron Bay is about 90 km south across the New South Wales border, and Brisbane is an hour north. The Moreton Island snorkel cruise over the Tangalooma Wrecks checks in at Rivergate Marina in Brisbane at 9 am, so it works from either base; from the Gold Coast it is an early start. It costs from US$188 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.5 from 1,195 reviews.
Australia Zoo, on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, is a longer day: the transfer and entry ticket from the Gold Coast runs about 10 hours and costs from US$141 (checked October 2026).

Which airport
Brisbane Airport is the larger of the two and has more international flights. Gold Coast Airport is at the southern end of the coast, next to Coolangatta, which is handy for a stay in Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta and a longer ride to Surfers Paradise or Main Beach. Flying into Brisbane and staying on the coast is common; the train makes the link.
Is it better to visit Brisbane or the Gold Coast?
For most holiday visitors, the Gold Coast, because the beach, the surf and the activities are the reason to come to this corner of Queensland. Brisbane rewards a day or two if you like cities, and it is the better base if you are here for work, a concert or the museums. With a week, do both: four or five nights on the coast, and Brisbane as a day trip or a short stay at either end. The how many days guide plans the coast part.
