The Best Time to Visit the Gold Coast
The best month to visit the Gold Coast, season by season: whales June to October, the wet summer, winter temperatures, Schoolies and school holidays to avoid. Checked October 2026.
The best time to visit the Gold Coast is spring, September and October, when the humpbacks pass with their calves, the days are warm and mostly dry, and the summer storms and school-holiday crowds have not yet arrived. Autumn, April and May, is the other sweet spot: the sea is still warm from summer and the rain is easing. Winter suits whale watching and the hinterland. Summer is hot, wet and busy.

The short answer
| Season | Weather | Best for | Watch out for |

| Summer, Dec to Feb | Hot, humid, the wet season | Swimming, glow worms (brightest Dec to Mar) | Late-afternoon storms; school holidays |
| Autumn, Mar to May | Warm, rain easing | Warm sea, surfing, quieter beaches | Easter holidays |
| Winter, Jun to Aug | Dry, sunny, cool nights | Whales (peak Jul to Aug), hinterland walks | Cool water for swimming |
Whale season: June to October
Humpbacks pass the Gold Coast from late May or June to October, sometimes into early November. July and August have the most whales, heading north; in September and October they come back south, many of them mothers with newborn calves. In late October, the season’s last weeks, some boats are still running: the Sea World Cruises whale cruise lists departures and costs from US$63 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 from 680 reviews, with a sighting guarantee.

Getting into the water with the whales is a different, shorter season with its own rules: in Queensland a swimmer must stay at least 100 metres from a whale. The next swims on sale start in June 2027 (checked October 2026). swimwithwhalesgoldcoast.com covers the swim, the season and the rules in depth.
How cold does it get in winter?
Not very. Winter days on the Gold Coast, June to August, average about 21 to 22 °C, and nights about 12 to 13 °C. It is the dry season, mostly sunny, which makes it the best time for long hinterland walks. The sea is the cool part: about 21 °C in July and August on long-term averages, against about 27 °C in February. Surf schools hand out wetsuits.
What is the weather like in June? Sunny, dry and mild, with days around 21 °C. The first whales of the season arrive.
The wet season
December to February is summer and the wet season. February is usually the wettest month, with about 184 mm of rain on average, but rain tends to come as short storms in the late afternoon and early evening rather than whole wet days. Book water activities and balloon flights for the morning. The rainy day guide has the plan for the afternoons.
When not to visit
Schoolies Week. Queensland’s school leavers celebrate on the Gold Coast from 21 to 27 November 2026, with the night-time hub on Surfers Paradise beach. If you are not one of them, stay in Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta that week, or come another week.
The summer school holidays. Queensland’s summer break runs from 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027. Christmas, New Year and January are the coast’s busiest weeks, the beaches are crowded and accommodation books up early.
Easter. A four-day long weekend, and busy for the same reason.
The best month
If you can choose any month, choose September or October: whales with calves, warm and mostly dry days, and the beaches before the summer crowds. If you are coming for the sea itself, choose April or May, when the water is still around 24 to 25 °C. And if your dates are fixed in summer, plan the mornings for the beach and the evenings for the rainforest.
Two clocks on one coast
From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, New South Wales runs on daylight saving and Queensland does not. Tweed Heads and Byron Bay are then an hour ahead of the Gold Coast. Gold Coast tours run on Queensland time, so check the clock on any booking that starts across the border.
