The Best Area to Stay on the Gold Coast

Which part of the Gold Coast to stay in: Surfers Paradise for nightlife and tour pickups, Broadbeach for food, Main Beach for quiet, Burleigh for the cafes, Coolangatta for surf. Checked October 2026.

Updated October 2026

For a first visit, stay in Broadbeach or Surfers Paradise. They sit in the middle of the coast, most tours pick up there, and the light rail links them to the boats at Main Beach and, since August 2026, to Burleigh Heads. Choose Surfers if you want nightlife and do not mind noise; choose Broadbeach if you would rather have good restaurants and a quieter night. Burleigh Heads is the nicest part of the coast for many people who know it, and Coolangatta is the place for surfers and early flights.

Surfers Paradise

The coast’s centre of gravity: towers along the beach, Cavill Avenue down to the sand, the clubs around Orchid Avenue, and the SkyPoint deck at the top of Q1. It is the easiest place to stay without a car, and the beachfront markets run on the Esplanade on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The catch is noise late at night, and the week of Schoolies, 21 to 27 November 2026, when the school leavers’ night-time hub is on Surfers Paradise beach.

Parasailing goes up over the Broadwater from Surfers, an 8 to 10-minute flight from US$67 in current promotion (usually US$105) (checked October 2026).

Broadbeach

A few kilometres south of Surfers and a step calmer: restaurant streets, cocktail bars, the Pacific Fair shopping centre and Dracula's cabaret dinner show. The beach is the same long strip of sand, and there are several light rail stops, so Surfers is a few minutes away when you want it. For a first visit with a partner, Broadbeach is the safest choice.

Main Beach

North of Surfers, between the ocean and the Broadwater, Main Beach is quiet and residential, with Tedder Avenue’s cafes and The Spit beyond Sea World. It is where most of the water activities start: the whale and dinner cruises leave from the Sea World Cruises terminal, and the jet boats from the Broadwater side. Stay here for boat days and early nights. Jet Boat Extreme’s 55-minute ride costs from US$63 (checked October 2026), rated 4.9 from 436 reviews.

Burleigh Heads

Burleigh has the headland: a short coastal walk through Burleigh Head National Park, with views back up the coast to Surfers, and a well-known surf break off the point. The town is cafes and beach bars, and it feels more like a place people live than a resort. Since 9 August 2026 the light rail runs to Burleigh Heads through Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach and Miami, which makes it a much easier base than it was. Calm water for children is a short walk south, where Tallebudgera Creek meets the sea.

Coolangatta and Kirra

At the southern end, by the airport and the New South Wales border, Coolangatta and Kirra are surf towns with their own beaches and point breaks. Surf schools teach at Kirra, and some whale cruises leave from the southern end in season. Across the border, Tweed Heads runs on New South Wales time, an hour ahead from October to April. The trade-off is distance: the northern theme parks are a long drive.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is on the way north, with day entry from US$50 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), rated 4.7 from 414 reviews.

Where to avoid

No part of the tourist strip is somewhere to avoid outright; the question is noise and timing. Avoid Surfers Paradise during Schoolies Week unless you are a school leaver, avoid a beachfront tower on Cavill Avenue if you need quiet nights, and avoid basing yourself far from the light rail if you will not have a car. Driving between the coast and Brisbane at peak hour is slow on the motorway.

Which part is nicest?

It depends on what you came for. For the beach and the buzz, Surfers. For dinner, Broadbeach. For mornings on the water, Main Beach. For the feel of a beach town with a national park at the end of the street, Burleigh Heads. If you have a week, split it: a few nights in Broadbeach or Surfers for the activities, and a few in Burleigh or Coolangatta to slow down. The how many days guide has a plan to fit it.
