Gold Coast Activities: What Is Worth Booking, and What Costs Nothing

Most of what makes the Gold Coast worth the trip happens on water or in the rainforest behind it: the surf beaches, the Broadwater lagoon behind Surfers Paradise, the humpback whales offshore from June to October, and the glow worms of Springbrook and Tamborine Mountain an hour inland. The beaches cost nothing. What is worth paying for is a ride on the water, a night in the hinterland, and one big thrill if you want it. This page sets out which activities earn their price, what each one includes, and where the theme parks fit, since most of their tickets are sold elsewhere.

What costs nothing

• The beaches. The surf beaches run south from The Spit to Coolangatta, broken only by the headlands. Swim between the red and yellow flags: that stretch is the patrolled one, and of 21 beach drownings Surf Life Saving Queensland counted, 57% happened more than 100 metres outside them.
• The hinterland walks, if you drive. Springbrook’s Natural Bridge, where a waterfall drops through the roof of a basalt cave, is a national park walk, and O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk in Lamington National Park, nine suspension bridges about 15 metres above the rainforest floor, is free. • The view from the beach. From June to October whales pass close enough to spot from the headlands. A boat gets you near them; a lookout does not, but it is free.

Worth paying for, ranked

1. A whale watching cruise, June to October. The most reviewed is the Whales in Paradise cruise from Sea World Cruises, up to 2.5 hours with underwater microphones and a sighting guarantee, from US$62 as of October 2026, rated 4.6 from 680 reviews. 2. A jet boat on the Broadwater. Spins and slides in a boat built for them, with no slow zones on the shortest ride. Arro Jet’s 30-minute ride starts from US$34; Jet Boat Extreme’s 55-minute ride, from US$62, is rated 4.9 from 436 reviews. See Gold Coast jet boat rides.
3. A surf lesson. Two hours on a soft board with an instructor is the safest way into Gold Coast surf. Go Ride A Wave’s Surfers Paradise lesson, from US$66, has 1,300 reviews at 4.9. Gold Coast surf lessons.

5. A day in the hinterland or on Moreton Island. Springbrook’s waterfalls, Tamborine’s wineries and Lamington’s treetops each fill a day by coach from US$83; the Moreton Island snorkel cruise over the Tangalooma Wrecks is the big-ticket day at US$188. Day trips from the Gold Coast.
6. Parasailing or a jet ski. Parasailing over the Broadwater runs from US$67 for an 8 to 10-minute flight; a jet ski costs from US$84 for 30 minutes per ski, shared by up to two riders. Parasailing and jet ski tours.
7. One big thrill. A tandem skydive with a beach landing costs from US$368 with Gold Coast Skydive, or US$265 over Byron Bay with transfers; a sunrise balloon flight over the hinterland costs from US$202. Skydive and hot air balloon pages.

Wildlife, views and the theme parks

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, at the southern end of the coast, sells day entry from US$49, with a wildlife hospital, a free-flight bird show and koala photos for an extra fee. SkyPoint on the Q1 tower in Surfers Paradise puts you 230 metres up from US$25, or on the outside of the building for the climb from US$64. Both of SkyPoint’s tickets are non-refundable.

The big theme parks are the one part of the Gold Coast this site cannot cover well. Movie World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild and Paradise Country sell their passes on their shared website, and Dreamworld sells its own tickets. When to go

Humpbacks pass from late May or June to October, with the most whales in July and August and mothers with newborn calves in September and October. Winter, June to August, is mostly dry and mild, with averages of roughly 12 to 22 °C, which suits whale cruises and hinterland days. December to February is the wet season: storms tend to arrive late in the afternoon, and February is usually the wettest month, so book parasailing, jet skis and balloon flights in the morning. Currumbin’s surf schools say the water rarely drops below 18 °C, and they teach all year.

Two clocks on one coast

Queensland does not use daylight saving; New South Wales does. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, Tweed Heads, which runs into Coolangatta, and Byron Bay are an hour ahead of the Gold Coast. Gold Coast operators list times in Queensland time, and the Byron skydive and balloon pages say which clock their check-in uses. Check it before you set an alarm for a sunrise flight.

Getting around

Most water activities start from the Broadwater side of Main Beach and Surfers Paradise: Marina Mirage, the Sea World Cruises terminal and Cavill Avenue. Whale cruises and surf lessons in the south start at Coolangatta and Kirra. Hinterland tours pick up in Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Main Beach and Southport, and Southern Cross Tour Co’s need two days’ notice to cancel free.
